The Lasting Impact of Physician John P. McGovern

The senior vice president of forensic science initiatives at NMS Labs, Barry Logan is a toxicologist and leading educator on the subject of forensic science. Throughout his career, toxicologist Barry Logan has received multiple awards and honors, including the 2006 John P. McGovern Foundation Leadership Award for substance abuse prevention.

A major figure in the fields of medicine and humanities, John P. McGovern was born in 1921 and went on to become an internationally recognized physician, philanthropist, researcher, humanitarian, educator, and author. In his lifetime, he authored and co-authored 247 publications and 22 books and held appointments at 15 universities. In 1961, he founded the John P. McGovern Foundation and established the McGovern Allergy and Asthma Clinic, which went on to become the nation’s largest private clinic.
For his service, McGovern received numerous awards. For instance, he accepted the Private Sector Initiative Commendation distinction from president Ronald Reagan in 1985. Additionally, he is remembered for his sizable donation of rare books to the Texas Medical Center Library, which led to the formation of the McGovern Historical Collections and Research Center. McGovern died in 2007.
