Based in Pennsylvania, Dr. Barry Logan is a longtime forensic toxicologist who oversees forensic science initiatives at NMS Labs. As a forensic toxicologist, Dr. Barry Logan has specialized knowledge of the health impact of various synthetic cannabinoids. Among his published articles is Analysis of Synthetic Cannabinoids in Botanical Material: A Review of Analytical Methods and Findings (Forensic Science Review, March 2013).

The paper focuses on compounds that are cannabinoid receptor agonists and were initially synthesized for the purposes of medical research. These were later appropriated by criminals and entered the illegal drug market. With psychoactive effects that mimic marijuana, synthetic cannabinoids have become increasingly popular. Typically, they are sprayed as compound solutions onto botanical materials after being dissolved in organic solvents.
The products are widely marketed and sold as “herbal incense” via the Internet and in a variety of retail settings, including convenience stores and smoke shops. The use of the label “not for human consumption” is an attempt to skirt laws that prohibit the manufacture and sale of these synthetic cannabinoids for human use.
The paper analyzes these illicit botanical products and details the analytical techniques employed by forensic scientists, such as those at NMS Labs. Joining Dr. Logan as listed authors of the paper are Brandon Presely and Susan A. Jansen-Varnum, PhD.
