Study Finds MDMA May Contain Novel Substances

Dr. Barry Logan is a toxicologist who serves as the senior vice president of Forensic Science Initiatives and chief of forensic toxicology at NMS Labs. Before joining NMS Labs in 2008, Dr. Barry Logan held appointments as state toxicologist and assistant professor of laboratory medicine at the University of Washington in Seattle, and the director of the Forensic Laboratory Services Bureau for the Washington State Patrol. He has published over 90 papers on forensic toxicology.

In the October 2018 issue of the Journal of Analytical Toxicology, Dr. Logan co-authored a paper titled “The Detection of Novel Stimulants in Oral Fluid from Users Reporting Ecstasy, Molly and MDMA Ingestion.” The paper reports the results of a 4-year study of novel psychoactive substances detected in attendees of music festivals in Florida and Georgia who believed they had ingested the drug MDMA. The researchers tested the saliva of 223 participants, and found that 66 of them had at least one novel substance in their systems.
